Antique French Enamel and Gold Cufflinks, Circa 1915

£2,900.00
S241024CL

A pair of enamel and gold cufflinks, with an embossed flower centre, acanthus leaves at the quarters, alternating with white enamel and a ribbon crossed, banded border, on carabiner links, with French eagle marks for 18ct gold and makers' marks, circa 1915, in a case, with red velvet lining.

The links on the back of the cufflinks, which connect to the carabiners, have maker's marks, which are difficult to read. The initials appear to be AG. with a possible dog's head however this is to be confirmed. This could be the maker's mark for Abel Guesdon, registered 1911, later Vve Gusedon, which may mean the business was continued by his widow.

The carabiner links, have French eagle marks for 18ct gold, are numbered 27971 and have GD and ace of clubs maker's marks for Georges Drouet. Drouet bought the business of Jean Porlier and Charles Panier, established in 1882, who specialised in cufflinks and shirt buttons, from Jean's son, Hippolyte Porlier, in 1901, this is when his mark was registered. His address was 6 Rue Villedo, Paris. In 1906 Drouet won a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Milan. He was succeeded by his son Raymond Drouet, in 1929, who used the same maker's mark. Raymond went on to produce pieces for Hermes and René Boivin.
With thanks to Jean Jacques Richard.
