Bohemian Garnet Silver and Gold Cluster Ring, Circa 1890

LOT 77

A Bohemian garnet cluster ring, set with deep red, rose-cut, Bohemian garnets, set in silver, with a flat gold shank, circa 1890. It should be noted that the garnets have been glued into their settings.

Garnets have been used in jewellery throughout human history. Their use boomed from around 1780. At the time it was believed they cleansed the blood and aided circulation. Bohemian garnets reached their peak of popularity in the 19th century. The colour looked particularly attractive with most complexions, especially in candlelight. The pyrope garnets were so plentiful that they were worn by nobles, aristocracy and working classes alike. There were reports of carriage drives being gravelled with garnet crystals. Changing fashions, two world wars and luxury items being considered too ostentatious in eastern Europe caused garnets to fall out of favour.
