Victorian Sapphire, Diamond and Gold Crescent Brooch, Circa 1880

£8,950.00
S18123B2

A Victorian sapphire and diamond crescent brooch, set with seven, round faceted sapphires, graduating in size, alternating with eight pairs of old-cut diamonds, in claw and grain settings, the ends of the crescent are embossed, the inner curve is plain, with a crown claw set outer curve, with a pendant or safety chain loop on the back, with an pin and safety catch fitting, mounted in gold, circa 1880. With an estimated total sapphire weight of 2.90ct, in our opinion the inclusions have characteristics of Ceylon sapphires, origin Sri Lanka. The estimated total diamond weight is 1.20ct.

In Victorian symbolism the crescent or new moon represented a new relationship. Hopeful it will "wax" into matrimony.
